The mission and purpose of the Mary Buttrill School is "Providing a safe and loving atmosphere within a Christian environment that prepares children for a lasting educational experience". Explore here and find out about us and our purpose as a ministry of the Jackson United Methodist Church
Purpose & Philosophy
Here at Mary Buttrill School, we strive to teach the whole child and meet the child's individual needs for social, physical and intellectual growth. This is accomplished by our determination to meet the mental, emotional, sociological and spiritual needs of each child and to stimulate within them the creative instincts, all conducted within a Christian atmosphere of mutual respect, trust, and love. We feel this is fundamentally important in the educational development of our students.
CAMPUS
The Mary Buttrill School is located on the campus of the Jackson United Methodist Church, which is depicted in the collage above by Jackson artist R. Scott Coleman. The gothic revival style sanctuary building (center) was constructed in 1924 and extensively rennovated in 1974. The educational wing (center left) was added in 1986 which includes the Chapel used by the School each week for chapel services, a library, music facilities and classrooms for the various grades of the school. A playground was constructed around this time and has been consistently improved and upgraded over the years. In 2000, the Family Life Center (top right) was constructed and connected via a skybridge to the main facility. This building includes  a large gathering room, a modern kitchen and dining facilities and indoor recreational areas for the students physical activities. Special programs and events which supplement the school are conducted in this facility as well. Access to the facility is controlled by design to limit the traffic flow and to prevent accidents by allowing all traffic to enter and exit from the rear of the facility off of Second Street. School children enter through the church tower door (top center) and the rear portico. A teacher is always there to greet them as the arrive and see them off as they depart.  While the Jackson United Methodist Church plays an important role in the well being and location of the school, the school operates under a school board that is separate from the church board. The school operates as a ministry and outreach of the church and like the church, believes in the United Methodist tenets of "Open Hearts, Open Minds, Open Doors"

MISS MARY BUTTRILL'S STORY.....

In 1817, Mary and her husband William Buttrill, a revolutionary war soldier and aide to George Washington moved to Butts County. Miss Mary, a devoted Christian of the Methodist Faith, had a log cabin built near what is now the entrance to the Jackson City Cemetary. One afternoon a week, she would gather the youngsters of the community, both black and white. There she held the first religious and educational activities in what would later become Jackson. Continuing her example of providing a well rounded Christian environment in which children can grow and learn, the Mary Buttrill school was founded.
Dear Mary Buttrill School Family,
As you know, this school year has been an exciting one for MBS. Our students in 4K and up have a full schedule of "specials" (music, PE, chapel, computer lab, art and Spanish) each week. We have been blessed to have two classes of 4K students for the first time. Our children have learned about helping their community as they brought donations to the City of Jackson Can-a-Thon and Empty Stocking Fund, as well as donating their chapel offerings to the local Let's Wrap coat program. Our PTO has been very active and visible in the community. The levels of experience and state certification of our teachers is at an all-time high.

It is our hope and expectation that Mary Buttrill School will continue to expand the opportunities that we provide to our students. In addition, we would like to reduce the fundraising burden that operating a successful private school has placed on our families. With those considerations in mind, the MBS School Board has implemented a fee structure for 2009-2010 which includes increases in tuition and activity fees. As you will note, it is our intention again to have classes for 3K through second grade.

Mary Buttrill School has been in operation since 2001. We take pride in the fact that we continue to provide the Jackson area with a loving, Christian-based learning environment at a cost that is well below comparable private schools. The enrollment period for current MBS families is now underway. Please complete the enclosed application and return it along with your registration fee to Paula Hilton by February 2, 2009. After that date, enrollment will be open to the general public. We look forward to another enjoyable and fulfilling year of working with your child
Sincerely
Paula Hilton, School Administrator
